Two weeks ago, I took time off of the day job so I could be with my wife during a surgical procedure and the first part of her recovery. Everything went smoothly, and I brought her home on day two.

This is why I think a better health care system in the U.S. would not only be more humane, it would boost the economy. Small business creation is the real engine of economic growth, and if people can't start small businesses because they can't afford to lose their health care benefits, everyone loses.

It's definitely nice to have a little bit of a cushion in terms of income.

I understand completely. I can't seem to find a job that doesn't eat my spirit to the point where it also eats my writing and creativity with it. Any advice on this?

Also, that kitty is cute :) I bet he/she loves to 'help'.

The best I was able to figure out was to leave the high-stress job with the small company where I was in a position with a lot more responsibility, and was on-call more, and to go instead with a more straightforward position of less responsibility and brainpower. It's not ideal, but this one leaves me with more brain to use for the writing and being creative.
