For something he'd been convincing himself wasn't a date, Jim found himself increasingly nervous. Two days had passed by quickly, and he'd been admittedly distracted since the moment she left. He had a decision to make. For all he knew, it could very much be the wrong one. The only thing he had left was to trust his instincts, and he felt like that ( Read more... )

The two days might've gone by quickly for him, but for Pam, they'd seemed about as long as the whole two and a half months she'd been on the island. There was too much she was still unsure of for her to manage not to be nervous. For all she knew, he could've already decided that this was a bad idea by the time she got there. If she didn't do this now, though, there was still a chance that she'd be repeating one of the biggest mistakes she'd ever made, and whether or not he even knew anything about that, she knew better than to risk it. Jim cracked open the door, then opened it wider when he saw who it was. He felt his stomach knot up all over again, but managed a smile as he stepped aside to let her in.

Whether or not she could tell he was stalling, she didn't actually mind. She was still half-convinced that she wouldn't want to hear what he was going to tell her, and no matter what she'd said about wanting to stay friends or not expecting anything from him, that didn't mean it wouldn't be difficult. She just had to keep reminding herself that this would all be worth it.

"Hey," she said, managing a smile of her own before she walked past him. She didn't know what she'd been expecting, really, but it was all a little more organized than she'd found herself thinking it would be, and she paused near the table to glance back over at him. "This looks really great, Jim, thanks."

"I might've picked up a bit of cooking since I've been here," he replied, and his smile was a little more natural when he said it. He just hoped the old Pam wasn't just trying to make him feel better when she told him he was getting better. "You know, something beyond cheese sandwiches."
