SCOTUS meme!

Oct 02, 2008 14:57

This meme made me laugh, because when I read the news article about Palin's interview I immediately trotted to DaMo's office and said, "Hey, how many Supreme Court cases can you name and at least know a little about?"  :)  Glad I wasn't the only one.

As evidenced by Katie Couric, Sarah Palin is unable to name any Supreme Court case other than Roe v ( Read more... )

See I didn't know about that and thanks for telling me :)

Plessy v. Ferguson and Brown v. Board of Education were hammered into my mind during High School by various history classes so they where the first that came to my mind.

I was thinking of mentioning Plessy and Brown, but other people on my flist had already come up with them. :) Dred Scott would have been my first choice, but merfilly nabbed that one.

It sounds like we're picking sides for a kid's baseball game, lol. "I'll take...Plessy and Gore v Florida!" "Dangit, I'm stuck with Bowers v Hardwick again..."

*grin* Yay! I'll confess to being something of a SCOTUS junkie, so I really enjoyed this meme. I would have gone with Loving v. Virginia but you mentioned it already. :)

I got stuck in a boring meeting today and ended up jotting notes to myself as I came up with other names--"Oh, ACLU v. Skokie, that's a great one! And Lawrence v. Texas, I love that one!" And, uh, feeling like a dork. :)

Ah, ACLU v. Skokie, that would be the Illinois Nazis, wouldn't it? Good one! And I couldn't remember the name Lawrence v. Texas either, but mofic used that one, so now I remember.

I need to read more about the Court, because it's fascinating.

Darn those Illinois Nazis! A Supreme Cout case I remember best because of Jim Belushi, how...strange. :) And I'll admit it took me a couple of hours before Lawrence v Texas came up in my head. I could have talked about it off the cuff, but not come up with the actual name...

I find the Supreme Court amazing, these 9 people working so close together on such important things, and we see so little of their personalities and souls, it's...like the JLA, lol...

Not gonna repost this one, but I find it rather sad that I can name and talk about at least two, just off the top of my head (US vs. Nixon and, uh, Hustler vs. Falwell) but a potential VP will draw a blank when asked to name more than one...

Of course that's just because I pay attention when I watch movies, but still, I'd kind of expect most US citizens to be able to name quite a bit more of these than I can.

It's quite sad.

(on an OT note: I realized a couple days ago that I'll be in Alaska on Nov. 4th -- that should be....interesting. *lol*)

I totally forgot those two! I remembered Gore v Florida but not Nixon v US, darn it. :(

You'll be in Alaska Election Day? Wow, that should be fascinating, lol...

Okay, I forget who all the 'who VS who' that were involved but 2 that come mind are:

The one where a man was arrested & convicted for burning the US flag & the Supreme court overuled the sentance on the grounds that the man was protected under the First Amendment.

And the one from 2003 (??) where they ruled anti-sodomy laws violates a couples right to privacy.

Oh, and I can thank Steven Spielberg for this one.

The case of the slave ship Amistad. The Supreme Court upheld a ruling stating that the 'slaves' were not slaves but kidnapped 'free' persons and were to be released.

It's actually kind of cool how many Supreme Court decisions have made it into movies, somehow! Heh, I can't remember the name of the first one either, even though it's one of the ones my husband cited. And the second is Lawrence v. Texas, but I admit I had to sit for a couple of hours with it on the tip of my tongue before it suddenly came to me. That's actually true of Miller v. California as well, but people had already mentioned most of the ones I knew quickly.

Tinker! Anything that gets in the way of "reasonable and appropriate discipline" is not allowed in school. I did a project on it.
