SCOTUS meme!

Oct 02, 2008 14:57

This meme made me laugh, because when I read the news article about Palin's interview I immediately trotted to DaMo's office and said, "Hey, how many Supreme Court cases can you name and at least know a little about?"  :)  Glad I wasn't the only one.

As evidenced by Katie Couric, Sarah Palin is unable to name any Supreme Court case other than Roe v. Wade. [I have seen that vid. I don't much care to go digging for it again.]

The Rules: Post info about ONE Supreme Court decision, modern or historic to your lj. (Any decision, as long as it's not Roe v. Wade.) For those who see this on your f-list, please feel free to take the meme to your OWN lj to spread the fun!

Go forth, and edumacate!

One of my favorites and a case germane to many of us:  Miller v California.

This was the case in which the Supreme Court defined "obscenity" as material with sexual content that violates "community standards" and has no  "serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value."  The "violating community standards" clause is especially complex now in the age of the Internet, where material written in San Francisco can be easily viewed in Peoria.

The case is famous for prompting the wonderful line about obscenity uttered by a justice in a different case, Jacobellis v Ohio, as they debated what "community standards" and "without serious artistic value" actually meant:  "I can't define it, but I know it when I see it."
