Have you dont anything like drop it? Anything hit it? If not, and you're still in warranty, you can send it back to the repair department of whoever made your computer.
Usually that kind of stuff happens when you wipe your screen too hard, or use some kind of alcohol solution to clean it and the plastic overlay on your screen gets damaged. Sometimes this can be the maker's fault because they have the screen on too tight, and it causes it to break down. If it's under warranty, send it back if you can.
To get it fixed would probably cost you just as much as a new laptop.

It's a couple of years old now. I'll dig out all the literature that came with it, see what kind of warranty I got (I'm betting 12 months...)

I've never used any kind of solution on my screen, and I either use a cotton pad to wipe my screen, or the duster attachment on my Dyson.
