Some technical help please...

I'm hoping the answer isn't 'buy a new laptop' because I simply can't afford it.

I've got a bunch of white marks all over my screen. I've had a couple for a few months, but over the last couple of days they've gotten really bad. There were just around the edge at first, and I had no idea what they were. I didn't worry too much about it at first because they were small. I didn't even mention them to hubby until a couple of days ago when the one at the bottom right got really strong, and I started to notice what looked like cracks (or white hairs) at the top. But this morning I have an answer. I left it running over night because I'm downloading something. uTorrent was running in the background, and my desktop was visible. When I come to use it today, there is a ghostly image of my desktop imprinted on the screen.
