I've heard lots of rumbling about The Family, but never anything that really convinced me that they're an entity with any real power, or that they even exist. Not to say I couldn't be convinced, but I've never heard anything about them from a source that was anything other than extremely suspect.

Christian fascist ideology bordering on totalitarianism, but yeah - all it takes is a little clout to get a lot of it.

Sources that discuss The Family, aka Fellowship:

LA Times: "Showing Faith in Discretion"

NBC Nightly News (video of leader Doug Coe doing one of his Hitler routines)

Time magazine: Doug Coe on the list of 25 most powerful evangelicals under heading, "Stealth Persuader"

"Faith in the Halls of Power," by D. Michael Lindsay, Oxford University Press

And then there's my book. It's true that you shouldn't trust what you read in any ol' book; that's why I provided 40 pages of end notes. Moreover, much of this first appeared in Harper's and Rolling Stone, which meant it went through both fact checking and legal review.

I don't doubt the words of this author about The Family but to be honest, the problem with this theology is that if anything, the Bible preaches to the lost, low, and poor in spirit. What this idiot (not the author, the founder of this movement) is teaching is heresy. It's no different than those who preach that God is a vending machine and you plug in a quarter and you get the life of riches.

It just doesn't work that way.
