I have such mixed feelings. Years ago I started saying that even if it was legal, I cannot afford Sylvia. With recent car problems, this is even more evident. She would lose ALL of her benefits, and we would be a one income family. There are a lot of "older" couples, heterosexual or homosexual, who have the same dilemma

I know about the suckage. The marriage penalty definitively applies. My parents have wrestled with this as well. If they were to divorce, they could get as much as $14K extra to live on each year. They've talked it over and have decided not to do so for now but, if the economy keeps getting worse, they may not have a choice.

It's really stupid to have to make relationship decisions based on money but, that's how society is rigged at the moment. It's also against the law in the country to be poor as well. That is a different topic, however.
