Oh, some sanity! Like a breath of fresh air. Thank you. Of course, Fear and Impending Disaster sell so much better than non-panic-inducing factual reality that no one's gonna pay much attention to the real story. =op
I often feel like hitting people in the head because, seriously, people??? Can't you think for a second there?
[and then, someday, something bad is gonna happen and I'm gonna get caught unawares, 'cause the internets and the tabloids and the alarmist shows have turned me into a hardcore skeptic]
What I honestly believe is that *all* doomsday prophesies, from Christianity's to the Norse myths to the Great Computer Crash of Y2K that never happened, all of these are just our projected fears about our own personal, inevitable death. It's a shared thought form of our collective unconscious.
Which is why I KNOW (with every little piece of my tiny, dark soul) that Something will eventually happen. Some day. To me. Because, you know: the day I die, I won't have more use for Possible Disasters.
To use them to make a personal profit (and selling stories is making profit) is simply disgusting.
Something I didn't remember until just a little while ago is that David Stuart was one of the folks featured on this amazing PBS episode of Nova -- Cracking the Maya Code. I still would like to write an historical AU in which House meets the linguistic genius Tatiana Proskouriakoff.
What I find more amazing is that, to this date, new Mayan buildings (and you might say what passed for their cities, too) are still being discovered -- some of them of the size and importance as those seen in Chichen Itza (part of the list of the new man-made world's new marvels).
And I'm sure House would be bitching about the 2012 apologists, were he to exist. Using the idea to wreak havoc in other people's minds, yes, but also destroying it inch by inch, gleefully.
I know the premise 2012 isn't real but I'm a pessimist and somewhat paranoid so some small part of my brain has to think, "What if it is true?" Of course, if it is the end of the world, it's not like any of us can do anything about it anyway. I think that's part of the reason why I tend to be interested in apocalyptic stories because they depict the main characters as actually surviving and coping with horrible disasters. That probably wouldn't be me though as I have a tendency to panic:(
Which is why I said greenwillow "[and then, someday, something bad is gonna happen and I'm gonna get caught unawares, 'cause the internets and the tabloids and the alarmist shows have turned me into a hardcore skeptic]".
It makes me twitchy, to be skeptic and still wonder. What Ifs plague my brain when I least expect them to. And I'd expect me to be calm and collected during a disaster, except I kind of panicked the time I was involved in a car crash. It wasn't even that bad, either, but I Was Going To Be Late For School, and THAT was srs bsnss, indeed (except, not really).
