Forty-five years ago today, more than 200,000 supporters of civil rights gathered on the Mall in Washington, DC. This was the culmination of their March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, and they waited to hear what would go down in American history as one of the greatest ( Read more... )

Thanks for posting this. I didn't know you were interested in American history. What are considered the great speeches in Mexican history? Did you hear Obama's speech last night? He needs some work on vocal technique. Pretty good though. I hope the hurricane doesn't hit land by you.

I lived in the Dallas area for eight weeks some years ago, and the lady I was living with had a recording of Martin Luther King's speech in her car. I heard part of it in our way to Louisiana, where we spent tath year's 4th of July :). I looked for the text later, and return to it now and then.

The closest thing Mexico has is not really a speech, but a battle cry. The Grito de Dolores was uttered by the priest Miguel Hidalgo and Costilla in 1810, thus beginning Mexico's battle for its independence. What's important about it is the yearly re-enacment in September 16 (I've never understood why people in the USA seems to believe Mexico's most important patriotic date is the Cinco de Mayo ( ... )

On May 5 many big city Mexicans honk their horns, get drunk and yell alot. Nobody does anything noticeable on Sept.16. The Puerto Ricans have a holiday around then too. My sister lived near the line between a Mexican area and a Puerto Rican one in Chicago and they tried to out do each other. Sometimes they'd fight too. And shoot off guns. So it's like our Independence Day so the idiot news people think it's the same thing.
Obama's speech wasn't an all time great but not bad. I was strongly for Hillary but clearly the President must have a penis. I support Obama now because McCain would be a disaster. A truly corrupt and crazy man.
The re-enactment sounds fun. Are there fireworks?

Belize's Independence Day is around September 16, so we kinda try to outdo each other too, although in a much healthier way. See, my city and one of Belize's cities are in oposite sides of the Bay, so the fireworks can be seen from the other side. Quite cool, huh?

I saw Obama today, in the news. Is it my idea, or has he been losing weight? He looks too thin, underweight even. I feel as if I could make him stumble without much effort, despite me being something of a little thing. McCain's partner made me *argh*. Not love for that duo from my part.

They shoot guns in the air not at each other. It's still stupid because the bullets fall and often someone is killed. It's not a Mexican-American thing in particular. Very popular with white US southerners ( ... )

Hehe. Yeah, I got the shooting guns in the air and not at each other. Otherwise, there would be a reduction in the number of idiotic people after every big patriotic celebration, right?

Last year, the city lost most of its trees because of hurricane Dean. The good thing was that September 16 was two weeks later, and the fireworks could be clearly seen from my home's roof because of the lack of trees :).

I had heard about her brother-in-law, but not about her son. I hate when people use things like that (and skin color, genre, origins, etc.) to try to impress others. It bothers me that somebody believes they can buy me with so shallow an argument -- and it bothers me even more when other people buys it.
