Candles? Paperbacks?

Candles might work, although I'm not sure how much she burns them these days. Paperbacks are a good idea for her in general, but don't really fit the theme of this year's gift. I bought a set of four canisters, and filled each of them (except the fourth - so far) with a consumable treat. For all of 2010, I'll refill each of them as she uses up the treat.

Used paperbacks *are* a consumable in my family. Buy at the thrift store, pass around the family, donate to the library, rinse, repeat.

chocolates of some sort?

I want to suggest something non-edible, for the sake of symmetry, but can't think of anything.

I thought of chocolates too, but I suspect the kids would swipe them before Mom got a chance to enjoy them.

For the 4th canister, what about dried fruit, or her favorite teabags (even loose tea), or individually wrapped hard candies? There is also trail mix.

But I'm speaking from my own likes here. Not so much the hard candies, but I keep a jar of wrapped peppermints for my guests, and for those moments when i just want to pour hot water over a peppermint, and drink the result when the mint dissolves. It's a good use for leftover candy canes.

You have done very well. You deserve a rest.

Tea sounds good. I know she likes Celestial Seasoning Red Zinger, so I'll try going to the fancy tea store in the mall and asking them to recommend a blend similar to that. I'll also throw in a reusable brewing gadget of some sort.
