True about the novel. I would certainly recommend it.

I don't think the subtitle issue is that big a deal -- I've seen both, and it would obviously be better to have the proper subtitles, but the difference is basically a more developed sense of Eli being (much) older than Oskar, so it's absolutely not something that should prevent anyone from seeing the current Lion's Gate edition. But yeah, I can't stop pushing this movie on people, it's just astonishingly good, and certainly truer to my memory of early adolescence than any American film I can think of offhand.
