LÅT DEN RÄTTE KOMMA IN (Let the Right One In)
April 21 2009, VHS, home living room, own

As given to me by Cecilia, as a stopgap until we can acquire versions that are both subtitled and correctly translated - because apparently this one isn't. And yet - it's still one of the best horror films I've ever seen. This is the very definition of an instant classic, and will reward many reviewings for years to come, inspiring much thought and speculation about the nature of the world and the characters.

I fell hard in love with both of our young "protagonists" almost instantly - the pale and diffident Oskar (his noncommital facade masking violent longings and vicious urges) and the mysterious, taciturn, quietly commanding Eli, easily the best adolescent ancient vampire I've ever encountered. (Sorry, Homer, you've been supplanted.) Apparently the book expands on some of the more horrifying, weird, unwholesome subtext of the film; I can't wait to read it.

The best of Swedish cinema; the best of low-budget filmmaking. If I started writing about this I wouldn't stop for days. It's part of me now...
