THE INCREDIBLE HULK
April 18 2009, DVD, home living room, from library
*NOTE: since I've let myself fall so far behind on reviews, these next few will be truncated until I have time to expand on them. Good enough; I did that when I kept a print film journal, too.*
I had hoped to see this in theaters, but I did not, like pretty much every film that came out last year that was not THE DARK KNIGHT. Much like with video rentals, I trained myself to stop using that service, because my hunger for viewing material is so ravenous that I quickly bankrupt myself if I give in. It's OK; I'm catching up, slowly but surely.
At last Edward Norton's HULK movie falls into my hands. So glad to see it. Unlike most of the world, I don't think it's a better film than Ang Lee's HULK, just very different - not as visually or emotionally daring, but possessed of an equal amount of eye-rolling, groan-worthy silliness. For every Ang Lee Hulk Poodle, there's a "Hulk smash!" I mean, really. It's the Hulk.
This one's got a cameo from Lou Ferrigno, though, and it is fantastic. And Tim Roth does a pretty good job, as does William Hurt and Liv Tyler, but none of them really worth writing home about. This movie does have somewhat superior action sequences and SFX though, especially the adorable Abomination, who actually is the source of all of the wince-inducing superhero one-liners. Man, I love 'em, but I hate 'em.
Enjoyed. Would happily watch again. The true masterpiece Hulk movie has yet to be made.
