Wow, you *have* improved. By a lot. And I love that Pippin icon. May have to snag it and everything. Wonderful in every aspect, actually. Colors and crop: all perfect. It almost seems like a painting. A long way from the first icon that, sadly, looks like it was made with Paint. :p
Bwah!! It does look like it was made with Paint, doesn't it? But even more sadly, it wasn't. :P I hadn't figured out how to use layers, so it might as well have been... It was all done with brightness/contrast and color balance. And notice the aliasing on the text.
You need to do this meme. I want to see your first icon. I bet it's pretty good. You know, I still remember when I saw your first post with those River icons -- they were much better than I thought they should have been for your first post. :P
Hey, before I forget, what about a tutorial for that Pippin icon? *bats eyelashes at you*
And I want to do that meme, but probably when my latest icon wasn't something I just made for an icon contest... *sheepish grin* And my first icons weren't those River icons but some avatars I made for a RPG game, I think. I'll try to see if I still have them in my photobucket account since I'm sure I've deleted them from my hard drive... Still, those River icons were the first I ever made purposefully with the knowledge that is was an icon and with the intention of making one. I did play around with Paint Shop Pro before, with other kinds of graphics, before getting drawn into the whole icon obsession thing.
Still, I cringe when I look at some of my older icons. And by older I mean, about 4/5 months ago. I can't believe some people have been at it for years!!
Tutorial? Seriously? :) Umm... Yeah, you'd think I could easily tell you what I did on an icon I made two hours ago. :P Except that I did a lot of messing around with curves, and as far as I know, there's no way to keep track of what settings you used unless you save them off, which I didn't, of course. I might be able to recreate it... Most of the coolness, however, is purely from the texture I used. From Trex-tures:
Thanks, baby! I think the one you have is actually a slight improvement on that one. There were a few different versions of it and I think I at least fixed the text a little on yours. ;)
And you've already made better things than that! By a lot!
Wow you've improved A LOT! that Pippin icon is in fact stunning! I love your icons, and that one is impresive, everything is perfect, the coloring, the cropping... My first icons were very crappy...hope I've also improved, lol!
Thank you, deb! I should give you some of the credit for the Pippin icon because I've learned a lot from you about using textures. :) I was thinking of some of your tutorials when I was trying to figure out the cropping... I added extra sky over his head so I would have a lot of light background to put a texture over. :)
Hey, those aren't too bad! Even at that early stage you were already showing promise in your use of textures. :) It was months before I attempted to try using textures... And I'm still kind of nervous around them. ;) But your skills have definitely evolved to an impressive level! Your icons these days are absolutely stunning (including that new one!).
That pippin icon is so good! I love it. You certainly come a long way! It's quite amazing how much we can improve with some practice isn't it?
I'll do that meme, seems like a fun thing to do. However, I don't think they'll be much difference between my first and last icon. But I'm still curious to see.
Thanks, lune! For someone who has as little artistic ability or aptitude as me, I'm pretty pleased with how much I've improved. :) I'd love to see yours, but I'll want you to do it again in six months too. ;)
And hey, Simon and Kaylee icon!!!! I was looking at your journal yesterday and did a doubletake when I saw your default icon. :D I'm glad you're enjoying Firefly!
