Day 12: What makes you fannish? And by that we mean, what is it about a tv show/movie/book/band/podcast/etc that takes you from, "Yeah, I like that," to "I need MOAR!!!" Is it a character? A plotline? The pretty? Subtext that’s just screaming to be acknowledged? Tell us what it is that gets you to cross that line into fandom.

I think what gets me ( Read more... )

Knowing that Arthur's death was coming, the last season was really a struggle for me. I'm still grieving Arthur's death and how they tormented Merlin. I still love the show but it is tinged with sadness, now, and my heart broke. I doubt it will be mended.

I really thought they were going to pull out some hat trick and keep Arthur alive. Even most of the way through that final episode. Completely ridiculous (of me). My heart broke too. <3

i was going to ask (and in a genuinely curious way, not a condescending way, I promise)- were you honestly expecting him to live? i mean it was a pretty light-hearted show, I guess? is that what you were going with?

I mean, yeah. They screwed with so many other things, I really thought they were going to pull it out of the hat, somehow. I really really really wanted a HEA for Merlin and Arthur. We didn't get the fabled Avalon. I had dreams of a kingdom where dragons flew free and magic users were not feared. It just did not end well for me.

Aww, I'm sorry that Arthur died in the TV canon - I didn't know, and was wondering why I didn't hear you talk about it anymore. :(

Ah. Yeah. I mean, you'd think after three years I'd be over it, but nah, not really. I thought they would find some creative way to save him and life would be all glorious, but no. They played with so many other elements from the legends....

Arthur's death was what killed fandom for me

Awwww, *pets*. I still bawl my eyes out watching that ep, but I love it. I would actually have been really disappointed if they had pulled a HEA for the Merlin finale.

I haven't found a fandom that I am as involved in as I was in Merlin yet, but I think that's mostly because I can't get into Tumblr and so much fannish interaction happens there now.

I mean, I just don't ever want to give myself over like to anything again, kwim? I think if they'd actually built Avalon, or if Arthur had known about Merlin's magic much earlier, I wouldn't have felt so broken and betrayed.

Hunh. Maybe this is my problem too. I had been pretty active on Tumblr, but now I'm super meh about it. And Twitter is good for RL stuff, but it's much harder for fandom stuff for me, for god only knows what reason. I'm totally happy being a very low key fan. I'm still producing fanworks. That's enough for me.
