Quilting question

Dec 09, 2012 20:34

As you all know, I've been making little quilts and now my mom wants me to make pillow covers for her in this style. Great! I'm very excited to do so, but for one of the covers she has requested a sea fan.  I am pretty bad at free motion quilting, otherwise I'd just go for that option because that's obvious.  Any ideas for something else that ( Read more... )

Oooh, sea fans are pretty. I bet you'll think of something creative to make it with!

Y'know, I was thinking of Merlin ladies myself today. I was feeling more down about fannish reaction to Merlin ladies, especially Gwen, though. Because the bad treatment of ladies in canon translates directly into bad treatment of ladies in fandom, and that's the part that most annoys me.

I decided that the productive thing to do is not to argue with people, but simply to finish my damn Gwen fic and to link to it thusly (Fuck you.) every time someone says something about Gwen.

Well. I...won't do that exactly, cuz it's not constructive, but I can fantasize, and I can finish the fic. Putting more love in the world is the best response.

ETA: I'm not expressing myself well, but what I meant to say is that I feel the best response to fannish dislike of a character is to write fantastic fic that will convince them otherwise. :)

I need someone who crochets to make it! LOL.

I feel you exactly! I was just rewatching last night's ep and thinking, damn, I really need to rewrite these scenes because the real Gwen would never act like that.

So, yes! We need to write the ladies the way we want to see them.

There are different kinds of laces. Or what you can do is make your own using free motion (it's really just straight lines). Or find a fabric that has the look of sea fan lace? http://www.brickhousefabrics.com/reef_fabric.html

Or use fabric paint/dye to do the pattern and then just quilt certain sections.

O. M. G. That squid fabric is divine, but *squeak* really expensive!

Oooh, excellent idea. Use a fabric with a print and cheat! Good idea.

Not sure how I could paint fabric to get that fine lattice effect. I'd totally do it if I thought I could manage it though.

Thanks!

I hate what they've done to the women on this show. They treat all the women as if they only fall into two categories: Saint/Sinner-Angel/Devil-Nun/Whore. It's classical misogynistic thinking. HATE THAT.

You forgot insane. Why, if they aren't crazy, do they all die? ARGH. I HATE that. Granted, they kill boys/men too, but still, it seems like women get the far worse end of that stick.

I think it's one of the reasons I have such a hard time with Gwen and why I don't like to think about her. I need to rewrite this past ep with BAMFy Gwen. And I don't mean BAMFY the way TPTB see her either.

Can't help with quilting sorry,
yay you for getting through your list, this week is going to be so busy, and I just want to sit here and find more stuff about Colin on stage!

Merlin and women: best not to get me started too much, but just because alot of Arthurian legends treat women badly remembering that they were written when women where things to be distrusted, and also by men on the whole who were bishops etc, doesn't mean the tv show should go down the some route. (they discarded everything else) which leaves me (and k-nightfox) to think that the producers are misogynistic b****rds who couldn't get laid if they tried, and have small appendages and even smaller brains!

LOL. Don't we all?

Sing it sister. I think the treatment of women on this show is why I just don't even want to think about them or write about them. ARGH.

My first thought was fabric paint, but if you want durability, thats not what your after. You could hand sew, but that would take till the end of time -.-

Not commenting on Merlin, since I have yet to see s5, and some of the previous (visiting) female characters were quite good.
