Breaking rules

Apr 03, 2012 10:11

I want to write a story that breaks a rule or two.  Give me a rule or two that I can break:)  No promises about when I can write the story since I'm supposed to be painting a room with kids this week, but you know, it might happen anyway ( Read more... )

I kind of meant the story/structure, but I'm willing to entertain elements of plot that break the rules.

Also, you've got a few squicks of mine on this list, so I wouldn't be writing those, but there are a couple ideas I could play with.

:) I saw my Dr Bobblehead this morning.

Take your time. Kids are home this week, so who knows what will happen with the writing.

Ah, expand your horizons. Or something. Good to see you back:D

I'm not sure what the rules are. that's why I was asking.

I was not thinking of writing ungrammatically or misspelling (urk!). Also, there is a difference between flagrant abuse and just a little tweaking. I was thinking more on the lines of tweaking rather than stomping the rules to little bits:D

You are definitely right though. The rules are usually there for a reason and a very good reason. I am just curious about whether or not it's possible to write a decent story and still break a rule or tow. Thanks for thinking with me.

Messing with timelines might be a lot of fun, especially if one went with a time traveling immortal Merlin:D

Good question! Maybe that's the place to start, although I feel like I've not got anything firmly enough in place to really start flouting them. Maybe I should stick with breaking canon/fanon rules for now:D Still toying with how much stretching I can reasonably do here. Thanks for thinking with me.

lewisian_gneiss has suggested a Merlin 'verse in which Merlin never had magic. I'm playing with that idea.

*holds head at the thought of writing a story in two dimensions at the same time*

I really should play with different points of view however.

Ooh, you are going to do a story set in a 'verse where Merlin never had magic? Very curious to see what other people might do with that.

Rule-breaking

Non-linear time line
Dialogue only
Description only
1st or 2nd person

Name misspelling or mispronuciation

Once someone over on theforce.net wrote a story where they broke almost every grammatical rule. It was hilarious.

Dialogue only is fun!

I was just saying that I should play with different POV's.

Interesting idea, mispronunciations. That could be a lot of fun to play with, especially since Gwaine and Gwen often sound a lot alike to me!

I suppose you don't have a link for that? It seems like it would be hard to pull off, but if you managed, it would be brilliant.

Thanks for the ideas! ♥

No link. It was years ago. I did go onto the website and it's down for maintenance anyway.

Oh, really? I looked at the front page, but couldn't tell anything about it and was kind of overwhelmed by all the graphics:D Thanks for giving me something to aspire to!
