“Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. That's one of the first things they told us in my art classes. "You're gonna suck, but that's ok :D". No one ever wants to believe that, though, because as far as they can see, it can't get any better than it does at that moment. I'm horrified to go back and look at art I made when I thought it was "awesome".

Hey, at least you thought what you did at the beginning was awesome! I'm trying to write something and I know it sucks:(

But that's my problem. I thought everything I did was awesome, but then I see it later and go "wow, that sucked". So I just assume everything I do sucks because I'll think that eventually xD

It does not suck!

Ugh. That is no way to think.

I like some of the little fics I've written and love the ones I co-wrote with lewisian_gneiss but this piece, trust me, it sucks. It may have some good/interesting/engaging parts, but as a whole, it sucks.

So very true!

The other part to remember is that improvement isn't a steady continuum, either. There are leaps forward, and there are times of regression as well.

Ha! Excellent point (and DD1, who is in the middle of her violin lesson) is a perfect example of that. No progress for months and then all of a sudden something clicked and bam, she's off and running.

I think your stories have a lot of promise. You are thinking about interesting things. And you are having fun and you like them.

Heh. I should be saying that about my own stuff too. I'm not feeling it right now. I feel more that way about my quilting than writing though, so I guess that's good, given that I started quilting 10 years ago.

I tell that to people who are just starting out in costumes. Give it time and you will get better!
