It was a long time since he’d been invited into a home and treated as a member of the family. The last time had been just after Han Solo had rescued him from Kessel, and that had been decades ago.

Most people saw the Jedi robes and heard the name and treated him with respect or -more often - fear and disdain. But the tight-knit Kiffar family had immediately taken him in as one of their own, including him in conversations, imparting assorted family secrets, and trusting him with various children. Their attention made him more than a little nervous.

Kyp winced as, without preamble, a small child scrambled into his lap and began braiding his hair.

“Relax,” whispered Phae, picking up the child’s twin and sitting next to him. “Didn’t I warn you that this would happen?”

“That doesn’t keep it from feeling awkward,” he admitted, wincing as the child unceremoniously yanked at a snarl.

“You’re the one who volunteered,” she reminded him airily.

He snorted. “I volunteered to represent the Order at a function, not to be adopted into a family.”

His fellow Jedi seemed to be enjoying his discomfort. “Consider it an honor. We don’t adopt just anyone.”
