Eh. I'd rather chastise the media outlets that gave such an idiotic story any kind of traction. Though that group on Facebook calling for everyone to pee on a photo of Terry Jones' face on Sept 18 has a certain perverse Grant Morrison sort of appeal.

Not to start an argument in a fed-up LJ post, but the media reports on news. This was news, you can't deny it. I'd rather it was reported than not, as I still believe that sunlight is the best disinfectant.

Was it, really? The guy has a flock of about 30 members. The initial coverage was him spinning it out that he'd been denied the right to have this burning as suppression (in point you're simply not allowed to have bonfires in the Gainesville city limits). If you follow the path of the coverage, his spin is pretty obvious. Time magazine has noted that in many ways, this only became legitimate news because the sensationalist coverage outraged the rest of the world. It should never have gone beyond some local reporter saying 'oh, look, the crackpot is at it again.'

Yes, totally.

Billions of "things" happen every day and it's up to the news folks to decide which are worth reporting and which aren't. IMHO, they frequently don't decide that very well.
