Hey Jo, love the warm up. Have a great trip. Thanks for your work.
It’s late. Everyone in my house is asleep but me. I sit on the couch, pillow clutched to my chest. Finally, I don’t have be in bed at a certain time. I don’t have to get up with an alarm clock. Summer vacation! Freedom from school do’s and don’ts. And now. It’s time.
I have the TV positioned just the way I like it. My pop sparkles in the glass. My hand reaches for a chip. The news goes off. The large curtain on the screen pulls back.
“And here’s......Johnny!”
He walks out on the stage, that quirky smile, his hands rubbing together, a nod to Ed and to Doc and the band. And then an appreciative thanks to the audience.
And then the jokes.
I raise the pillow to my mouth, covering up my honking laugh.
Nights with Johnny Carson. Mine to enjoy by myself. As long as I don’t wake anyone else up.

This is fantastic! You really put yourself there, wish some many wonderful details and great dialogue. Love the sense of adventure and rebellion here! Thanks for sharing. I especially love the hint of guilt over the loyal friend.

Oh gosh I love this! Especially the last line. You provide such a lovely sense of wonder, belonging, and sweet isolation before the wave of others arrive, as well as what it feels like to enjoy the peace for the impending rush of school and all it requires. Lovely!
