I need to answer this question. I have been working this summer on a verse novel and struggling to get it done. Teachers Write has helped but I still need to answer this very fundamental question for myself to get motivated to finish and put it out there ( ... )

My MG novel about an Air Force kid whose move to the next base is interrupted by a summer in Mom's tiny hometown is awesome because it shares a common heritage that civilian kids can't quite understand.

Moving every couple of years, having best friends leave in middle of school year, not exactly knowing what Dad's job is (classified, you know), dealing with the trickle-down effect of your Dad's or Mom's rank versus that of your best buddy or worst enemy - this is everyday stuff for Air Force brats, Army brats, etc. and we never saw it in the books about everyday kids that we read.

Thanks for all the Teachers Write help and encouragement! I've got my writing groove going now - and I hope that the family housing assignment at Pop's new base is open soon, for my character's sake!

This story matters to me because it feels like a story my characters are desperate for me to tell for them, and it's a secret that only I know -- so, even though it's just in my imagination and the characters' stakes aren't "real," I can't let it go. With every story that has kept me going, it's been this kind of insistence that keeps me going.

Thanks so much for the encouragement, and for sharing your Mondays with us this summer!

Many Happy Returns! Belated but heartfelt. I hope the year ahead is full of fun, frolic, friends, and any other f-words you especially enjoy. ;-)
