I need to answer this question. I have been working this summer on a verse novel and struggling to get it done. Teachers Write has helped but I still need to answer this very fundamental question for myself to get motivated to finish and put it out there.
The message of hope is important. If we didn't have hope, we would just curl up into a ball and cry all the time. I love Emily Dickinson's line "Hope is the thing with feathers." Hope gives us freedom to be strong in the face of difficult times.
My verse novel started with the working title, "Dear God" because the narrator, Jean, talks to God. But this summer it became "Hope is our Song." As I was revising, I kept seeing the word pop up in many of the verses. Jean is struggling with her best friend's cancer as well as with the everyday struggles of being a teenager. As she moves through the story, she discovers that she has courage. She understands that even though things may not turn out how she planned or wanted them to, there is another door opening.
Now I hope I can persevere and finish what I started. Thanks for everything!
