conservative in Seattle

Anyone here in Seattle and converting Conservative? Is the only option really Beth Shalom? I've not been but I think I missed their class by like two months. I went to a bigger shul in DC with a lot going on and a great rabbi, so switching is kind of jarring. I'm trying to figure out some of the Jewishly happening things in Seattle, and it seems ( Read more... )

I am! And, yeah, Beth Shalom is it for us. I haven't been (see: temporarily living with parents I'm still leery of telling), but Seattle isn't exactly the most Jewtastic city and the Conservative community is definitely small. It's not really surprising, given how generally irreligious the PNW is, but still a bit frustrating that there are so few options.

I just remind myself that I used to live down in Salem (Oregon), which I've learned has exactly one small Reconstructionist congregation. At least we have a Conservative shul? I try to focus on the positives.

Also, you totally replied to my post and I was about to respond to it when I got derailed by this comment. But thanks so much! It's weirdly helpful to hear about other people hitting the same roadblocks - the solidarity is very much appreciated. :)

Well I just emailed Beth Shalom and got a very nice email back. They want everyone to start their class in September, but welcomed me to services. If you'd ever like to meet up and go just send me a personal message.

That's good to hear! For my situation starting next September is probably for the best anyway, but it's a bit rough on you.

And that would be fantastic! Sometime after the new year, maybe? It would be much less nerve-wracking to go with someone. I'll definitely hit you up when it's doable.

Mind if I ask what synagogue you went to in DC? I lived there last year and miss the hell out of my community now that I've left (now living overseas in a very not-Jewish country- DC spoiled me, I think).

I went to Adas Israel, and it was great. Oh yeah, DC spoiled me big time. And I didn't think it would be a difficult transition back to Seattle and trying to get the conversion process off the ground again. I basically have to wait until next September.
