Ok, I'm in need of a bit of advice here. As I've mentioned before, I'm volunteering at the Harn Museum now. I love it, and I love the people I work with. Yesterday, I was working with the Director of Education, and she told me that the woman who interviewed me for the volunteer position (who is a wonderfully sweet woman and surprisingly only ( Read more... )

APPLY girl... what's the worst they can do? Say no? and they just might surprise you and say yes.

I will! The job isn't even posted yet. Unfortunately, UF's online job application system can reject applications that don't completely match the qualifications without even sending them to the proper department, so I'll probably need to find some way around that (thus talking to Christa). I'd be beyond perfect if I did get it though!

Is it horribly rude to talk to someone about applying for their job?

Not if they're leaving and you're on good terms with them. I would't think so, anyway, but people get offended over such silly things anymore.

That's what I was thinking. Like I said, it's not like she's being forced to go or anything bad--she's leaving for the NYC Fashion Institute!

absolutely you should go for the job! those job requirements are just there as "the ideal" or "a baseline". if they want you they can hire you even if you don't have the full year under your belt. you should totally go for it. and if it's public that she's leaving - you should absolutely talk to her about it! that's great news!

it's never rude to show an interest in your own career! she'll understand that. and the fact that the DoE mentioned these opportunities is a good thing. show that you appreciate her attention and BE interested. she'll be even more inclined to help you. keep us posted!

No, it's not.

If I were in her position, I'd like to know my previous position is being taken over by someone who is sure to do a good job, especially if I'm not leaving in a huff. I know that, if I left here, I'd want to make sure my successor would be the best there is, for my own and for my colleagues' sakes. I'd be sure to look among the people I know for possible candidates and if I had someone in mind, I'd do all I could to help them move into a favourable position to apply for my job.

If she really is nice and there is no bad blood between her and her colleagues, she will certainly think along the same lines and will not mind helping you with a bit of advice.
She is the one who knows what is needed to do the job, so she is the one you should be talking to in the first place.
