From an announcement by Waterloo Productions:
Roadtrip to Mordor - Author Jay Lake has been given 3-6 months to live. Before he dies, he's going to take his daughter to New Zealand. We want to make a documentary of their trip.

Deirdre and I will be in Wellington, NZ for the NZ natcon 'Au Contraire' between Thursday, July 11 and Monday, July 15.

That's going to be the second running of Au Contraire, We also attended its earlier incarnation in 2010, and then took a leisurely drive the length of North Island to Auckland, so I can recommend a few stops of interest:

1. In the foothills above Wellington, Zealandia is a must-see. It's a wildlife refuge protected against exotic predators, about the only place in the world you can see NZ's native fauna and flora as they were before the intrusion of and dominance by European species.

2. Te Puia and the Rotorua region. Rotorua is a geothermal and volcanic region in the ancient caldera of a supervolcano (thus the large lake, Lake Taupo, in the middle), and also the biggest centre of Maori culture. Te Puia is a pretty good Maori cultural and arts/historical settlement, next to a pretty flamboyant set of hot springs, hot mud pools, and geysers. Daytime and nighttime programmes ( ... )
