Well, we went on Sunday when there wasn't much going on at the yards. Also, where the Pullman is currently parked is at one edge of the yards, so we didn't have to cross any tracks or active working areas to reach it. (I wouldn't have done that anyway, both for safety reasons and to avoid trespassing.)
We have a big rail yard here (in Sacramento, CA), but it's pretty much completely off-limits. Too bad--there are some great old buildings I would love to explore.
Eventually it will all be incorporated into the new downtown development, but then it will be too late.
The other end of the Brooklyn Yards here has an honest to god working roundhouse and turntable, which a local railfan group uses to store a number of classic locomotives and rolling stock, including the X4449. Unfortunately, you cannot get to the roundhouse except by blatant trespassing.
