Given that Obama seems to usually do whatever the Republicans want (if not more), alas, I grow increasingly uncertain that the alternatives are unimaginably worse.
And I start to think "Why should Obama get the performance validation of being re-elected?" Will re-election just convince him that his base is happy with him pursuing right-wing policies instead of the progressive policies he campaigned for and was elected for in the first place?

When I was about ten years old, in the early 50s, our reservoir at Augusta Kansas dried up right down to the last cracks in the very center. We had seen it coming...people had wells dug so they could escape rationing. Then, when their neighbors dug deeper wells, the first ones went dry. And so on for a couple of years. Little signs in front windows "Private well" No car washing, no garden watering, 2 inches in the bathtub...which as far as I know most people adhered to. No bottled water on the shelves in the gracery stores. Finally we used water only for drinking, cooking, and washing. Those whose wells hadn't dried shared with their neighbors one pan of water at a time.
In the end, as all the wells were drying up, a converted oil line from a few scores of miles away was opened bringing us a small amount of very smelly water. From, as we were told, an underground salt deposit.

This is not something you forget.
It certainly isn't something you want to relive.

(b) Darned if I know. I'd like to see an actual liberal-progressive running.
