Well the strike is going ahead, so that means that Grangemouth, which I have now found out is the ONLY oil refinery in Scotland, is going to close for 2 days, which will cause massive petrol shortages. Add to that people panic buying and we have petrol at £1.30 a litre (which is about $3.00). No offence here, but I want to shout at the US people ( Read more... )

If it helps at all, you guys have better health insurance:( I think the cost of gas hurts at least my family because we have to commute so far into work. No one can afford to own a house in the city, so it's a 2 hour commute a day for me:(. We have a bus system but with the needed daycare it doesn't really work out.

The NHS is great, but it does not always work (there is not enough money for everyone, so alot of people go without basic care. I had to wait 2 years to get my gall bladder removed.. that was two years of pain, but I got my eye op within days! Quite a few people have private insurance these days). But yes, it is swings and round abouts, we gain the NHS but have massive taxation.

The housing market here is in trouble as well, very few people can afford a house in Edinburgh, and so we have people communiting 30 miles a day to come into work..:*(

The rat race... who needs it!:)

My main complaint about gas prices here in the US is due to the oil companies' record profits. If the cost was mostly due to taxes to pay for services, I would not be so cranky.

I hope for your sake the refinery strike is short.

Ohh we have record profits as well, and still the oil companies are closing offices!

The price of petrol here is so high because 80% of it is tax, add to that the other tax's and it feels like we are just sinking.

GRRR

*twich* The strike is going to last two days, the main problem is people are panic buying which causes the for-courts to dry up and since they don't have deliveries every day they are running out!

you have to remember that your space is a lot smaller to exist in. gas where i live now is about $3.60 a gallon (in a rather cheap market, certainly nothing like a big city). but i drive 5 miles a day each way to work, and that is darn close. a job i am applying for would require me to drive about 30 miles each way (60 miles a day ( ... )
