Well the strike is going ahead, so that means that Grangemouth, which I have now found out is the ONLY oil refinery in Scotland, is going to close for 2 days, which will cause massive petrol shortages. Add to that people panic buying and we have petrol at £1.30 a litre (which is about $3.00). No offence here, but I want to shout at the US people ( Read more... )

you have to remember that your space is a lot smaller to exist in. gas where i live now is about $3.60 a gallon (in a rather cheap market, certainly nothing like a big city). but i drive 5 miles a day each way to work, and that is darn close. a job i am applying for would require me to drive about 30 miles each way (60 miles a day).

when i used to live in florida, it was 44 miles on my car each day, just to get to work and back. i was fortunate to happen to live within walking distance of a grocery store, but for most people, you would have to put 5 miles on your car just to get food.

point being, where i used to live (or where i might end up working), i couldnt leave my car on a half a tank for two days and still get to work (granted i have a tiny tank, but still).

when i was 16 and in france i remember thinking about how spendy their gas was, but then again, that was also the same visit where the family i was staying with frantically asked me if my house was safe. this was due to the news reporting flooding in texas. i lived in florida at the time.

considering that the country of france would fit into the state of texas, i had to forgive them for not realizing that people who live in florida were not all that affected by the weather in texas. but my point is, we in the us are terribly spread out, so how the gas prices affect us are a bit different than for one who lives in a smaller country.
