Also. You distill the best of the conservatives/GOP and you get Libertarianism. You distill the best of the liberals/Democrats* and you get Libertarianism. It's a languishing party...why?

For a given value of "best", I think... I've long thought that if you think of the political spectrum as a circle rather than a line, then if you put the political center at zero degrees, the right at 270 and the left at 90, you'll find Libertarianism at 180. It's more like when you go so far left or so far right you start finding places where there's strange political overlap...

Interesting. So I guess at 0 degrees you'd have both the religious populism and economic populism of Pat Buchanan and Teddy.

No...I'm pretty sure you'd find both of those within 45 degrees either side of, what was it I said?, 270... Of course, part of this is that I'm condensing something as multi-faceted as a party platform into two dimensions, but I still think these days that a Teddy R. sort of economic populism is still closer to something Reagan advocated than Clinton...
