zen and needlework and writing

Weird subject, right? ;) This is just a ramble, and sometimes I hate coming up with titles ( Read more... )

I've had the same sort of zen experience with tole painting. Don't know if anyone does that anymore, but it certainly soothes my soul.

Glad to hear that Surviving and Wire Game are going to be coming back. They're great stories and I'll enjoy rereading what you've already given us to catch up! ♥

Oh wow... I used to do some tole painting too, eons ago. I think the cats had something to do with stopping that too. Nothing like purple paw prints on my grey carpet. ;) Although if the shop I used to paint at and took classes from hadn't closed up, I might still be painting. It was harder to keep going after the source for supplies and learning new techniques dried up.

I always intended to finish Surviving and Tiniowien and I do have the rest of Wire Game all plotted out. :) Life has a way of getting in the way. *hugs*

I played guitar while I studied. Just simple chords that probably drove my family nuts, but it helped me focus my concentration much like listening to music while I write does now.

I've been so focused on writing for years now. It seemed all my free time was either spent writing or reading or studying story structure in some form (there's a reason I watch so many DVDs). I think I've finally figured out that I need some down time from that too, just to recharge.

Also the Gordon Lightfoot took me back a way

I bet. It's taken me a way back. I rediscovered this CD a couple of weeks ago when I was looking for music to put on hubby's iPod. The title of a Gordon Lightfoot song -- Minstrel of the Dawn -- is the title of the new story I'm working on. ;) Inspiration comes in the weirdest places.

I have at least a dozen partially-done needlework projects laying around -- in fact, there's half a sock sitting on my computer table, shoved back against the wall. It's my first sock and it's right at the point where I need to start paying attention to the heel so I need some time when I'm not doing anything else and I just... haven't. :P I did the leg part while YMing and such.

Let's see -- I've got about 80% of the surface stitching done on a hardanger pillow. I'm this close to finishing it and being able to start on the cutting and all, but I just haven't felt like it recently. And I have a little practice piece of needle lace that I haven't worked on in ages, and a counted cross-stitch tiger cub which is going to be a gift for my husband the cat person if I ever finish it, and a half done Christmas tree hanging that needs to have a lot of silver cording frogged out because the Q-snaps that the lady at the needlework store swore to me wouldn't damage the piece At All crushed the cording [eyeroll] and an Assisi work placemat ( ... )

Oh man... I don't even want to talk about half-finished projects. ;) The joys of trying a lot of different creative things is all the stuff I started and then got distracted by something else. I have this needlepoint canvas up on the top shelf of my bedroom closet that's this intricate Christmas scene. I think I started that right after I got married. Is it done? Uhm... no. But it's one of those things I really, really need to pay attention to -- like with counted cross-stitch that's a hugely intricate pattern -- and I can only do a little of that at a time. And then there's all the crocheted projects, like afghans, part-way done. Hubby says I collect projects, and he's totally right ( ... )

Thanks. :) I collect projects too, heh, and materials -- I have fabric and threads and beads and some yarn and stuff all stashed away, and that's not even the stuff that's been started or even earmarked for a project. [groan]

My grandmother taught me to knit when I was three (although I didn't learn the pearl stitch till I was six or seven, LOL!) so I've had a lot of practice. I got into knitting lace in my early twenties and didn't do much work with yarn for a while, until a friend at work got pregnant and I did my first baby sweater for her. I like baby sweaters 'cause they work up quickly and I'm more likely to actually finish one while I still have the knitting bug. It doesn't always work [cough] but at least it has a chance ( ... )

Doing things with the hands can make wonders. I Love to do all kind of crafts. A lot of x-stitches and knitting. I've do post photos of what I do in my lj. I have plenty of on going things and the times I've finished one it feels so good.

I've seen some of the projects you've posted -- they're amazing. You have one icon of Orlando that looks like you cross-stitched the picture. I have to admit that that icon made me go looking for programs that convert photos to cross-stitch patterns. I'm not sure I'm that ambitious yet though. :)

And I'm incapable of watching a movie without a writer's eye.

Oh yeah, been there, still doing that. ;) I've learned to keep it to myself though so I don't annoy my family. I did finally hit a point where I can just sit back and watch without picking the thing apart totally, but if the story doesn't suck me in to the world of the movie, then I revert back to writer mode and all I can see are components instead of story.

I always try to finish the stories I start, especially the ones I post. I hate the unfinished feeling of abandoning something halfway through. There's quite a bit of both stories left to tell.

*hugs* Here's hoping you have a good afternoon, sweetie.
