back from seeing radiant city, the documentary about modern suburban life.
i really enjoyed it, and definitely recommend that if you have any kind of interest in the topic, to seek out this movie. at the same time, though, i realize that because
sustainable development and
new urbanism (a
prince charles favourite, apparently) are already among my pet topics, it's possible that i imagined the movie to be more informative than it actually was, projecting onto it knowledge i already possess.
so, on that note, i figured i'd share some stuff i've read and bookmarked in the past, for anyone who wants to know more on the subject:
national geographic: the new suburb?a basic but interactive flash animation of an example of a new urbanist neighbourhood. good if you want the basics in visual form, though there's also a
point-form text version.
cnu charter awardsthe congress for the new urbanism recognizes communities for putting the theories into practice (hello,
celebration, FL!)
car-free citiesideas for a city plan where cars aren't necessary- already a reality in divisions of several large european cities, including venice- it draws on a lot of new urbanist concepts. make sure you check out the maps!
