I find it's just a nice way to keep up to date with what friends - particularly long distance ones - are up to. The sort of "how are you? what you been up to?" convos that you'd have if you saw them in real life.
Plus the occasional outlet for pathetic rant or boring quiz, and the like - it can be quite amusing watching random net strangers who have nothing better to do, search out your lj and tell you nobody cares and you shouldn't bother posting.
Oh, and it can be good for photos too.
This is LJ - it only gets a little serious/interesting occasionally.

SORDID AND PERSONAL SECRET: I cheated on an ex when we had only been going out for a few weeks and, upon finding my cheatee fully shaved I came in my trousers rendering myself unable to continue.
