And what about all the tea in China, how much is that going for?

so aparently there's some kerfuffle about California getting paid to use a lot of water on crops.  Farmers in California revieve government subsities to purchase water at a low cost so they can produce crops like cotton and rice.

Problem: we've been having a few dry years, and cotton and rice take up a lot more water than the average crops, and ( Read more... )

The cutting down of water waste needs to start with stuff like baths and showers and people learning to turn off their damn faucets while brushing their teeth or after use and people separating their vanity from their lawns. And restaurants throwing water at you, repeatedly, in addition to the drink you potentially order, is just a mess. I always try to inhale it so it even when I'm bursting so it won't get wasted. Not producing water unless someone requests it goes really, really far. FOOD, HOWEVER, IS IMPORTANT. ECONOMICALLY AS WELL AS FOR THAT WHOLE SURVIVAL THING.

exactly! It's not that hard.

I mean, I hate to play this card, but all of SoCal used to be, and basically still is a desert. That's where our water's really going, shame on us for growing food.

We recently had a guest at our house for a couple months who like used a fuckton of water. Showers every day, after which the entire bathroom would somehow be drenched. Cleaning the kitchen counters or washing the dishes somehow made it look like someone had emptied a damn pool in the kitchen. Not to mention, leaving the frickin' bathroom light on when she wasn't in there. Not that it's about water, but I had to confront her about it eventually. She apologetically explained that it was for when she went back into the bathroom (or something similarly nonsensical?) and then I actually had to stare her down before she scurried back to the bathroom and turned off the light. o0 I wonder what the hell happened to our bills that month.

Ah, yes, and needlessly washing her clothes (under our sink) every other day and once trying to pressure me to put three articles of clothing in the washer by themselves. She was just mind-bogglingly wasteful all around -- water, food, it goes on like this. It was freaky.
