Title: Unexpected News

Summary: James gets some news.

James walked into his office and picked up the incessantly ringing telephone receiver. "Hello, Officers' Mess, how can I help you?" he said in a professional tone of voice. He listened carefully to the person on the other end as he sat down in his chair. "Oh, hello Jack," he said warily as he indicated to Rob, who had followed him in, who exactly was on the other end. "If you're going to tell me that aliens are going to invade, I better put paper down."
"Is it aliens again?" Rob mouthed to James who shook his head as he listened.
"Is the Doctor all right? Not regenerated again I hope?" James asked with a raised eyebrow. "Are you sure?" he asked the head of Torchwood after a long pause. "But... but..." His face turned alarmingly pale and he looked about ready to pass out.
"Pete! Get James a glass of water!" Rob yelled, leaning out of the office. He quickly rushed over and took the phone from the red head and put it to his ear. "I don't know what you just told him but he's in danger of passing out." He listened for a bit. "This is Rob. Now what did you tell him?" The dark haired chef listened for a few moments. "Well, I can see how that would cause a reaction like the one he's having right now."
Pete came in and handed James a glass of ice cold water. "You okay, mate?" Pete asked, placing a hand on James' shoulder. "You look like you've seen a ghost."
"Yeah, just had a bit of news," James answered, sipping his water. "Thanks."
"Good or bad?" Pete wondered. "Any time."
"That's what I'm trying to decide."
