"I wish Rose was here," the Doctor said as he stared at the walls of the dungeon that he, Jack and James had found themselves in. He found himself thinking of his previous companion and the words just slipped out without thinking. "She would've known what to do."
Jack noticed the look of hurt that crossed James' face and shook his head. "Doctor..," he began, unsure of how to continue. 'He never learns, does he?' Jack thought, wondering how James was going to react.
James cut across Jack's in an extremely icy tone of voice. "Well, cry me a fucking river," he growled, stunning the Doctor into silence. "She isn't here now, is she?!"
"No, I wish she was though," the Doctor retorted, annoyed at his present companion. "She'd be more agreeable than you."
Jack felt that he was in the middle of a tennis match as his gaze flicked from one man to the other. "Hey, is it just me or can you smell the testosterone in here?" he asked, hoping to make a joke and sighed when he was ignored.
"And whose fault is it that she isn't here?" James asked calmly. "And you know why I'm so fucking cranky, don't you? The two adventures before last ring a bell?"
"Just because you're so accident prone doesn't make it my fault that you were..."
"It leapt straight for me as soon as we got out the TARDIS. It wasn't as if I had a sign saying 'eat me' around my neck," James ground out between gritted teeth. "I need a cup of coffee."
"More like a huge bucket," Jack commented with a, hopefully, disarming smile. He wondered what they were talking about and made a mental note to ask the young red head later. He sighed and noticed that the wall that had the barred door in it was cracking down the middle. "Uh guys," he said, trying to get the other two's attention. He stood up and began pushing at it, hoping that it was weakened enough so they could break out of here. "I think I've found a way out."
"My human clone destroyed the Daleks. He was too dangerous to be left alone."
"So fucking what?" James snarled, clenching his hands into fists at his side. His eyes blazed with anger. "From what you tell me, they were evil and would've destroyed the universes anyway so he did what you were too much of a fucking pussy to do because you wouldn't be able to face yourself in the mirror afterwards. You could have wiped your fucking human clone's memories or you could have had them both here to stay to keep an eye on him but you didn't. My point still stands, you couldn't face your human clone because of what he, and you by extension, is capable of and for all your fucking emoing over Rose, you don't have her here because you sent her away to play 'Happy Families' with your human clone because you didn't seem to want her around either," James said, his voice rising to almost a yell.
"You don't understand."
"If you two could stop your arguing for a few minutes," Jack stated, from his position against the wall.
"What? Oh, I understand perfectly. You had your chance to let Rose stay but instead of letting her stay so you can be together in perfect fucking harmony or whatever, you sent her away. Oh, yeah, great sign that you want her around. Dumping her in the universe that she tried so hard to escape to get back to you. She crossed multiple dimensions to get back to you. I dunno about you but that says to me 'True Love'. Well, either that or extreme stalking. If you really wanted her here, you would have done every fucking thing in your power to let her stay," James punctuated his words with thumps on the bench that he was sitting on. The bench creaked and groaned, threatening to break at any moment. "Human clone or not, you would've let her stay if you wanted her to and now she's in the alternate universe playing 'House' with your human self because you pushed them together. And you push your other companions away and make 'em feel like they aren't as good as Rose when in fact they are. Possibly even better than her, due to not having to absorb the fucking Time Vortex or whatever, to defeat the bad guys. Didn't you tell me that Martha just laughed in the face of the Master when he was threatening to kill her? Now that's what I call gutsy and true courage. Anyone can absorb a Time Vortex, I'm sure. Not everyone can laugh in the face of danger and that's why I admire Martha. Especially with what she had to put up with while travelling with you. Now get over your inner emo and help us plan to get us the hell out of here because I'm sick of this fucking place."
"Right," the Doctor said softly, visibly stung by what James had said as a few of the things he had said had hit a little close to the truth. He quickly hid his feelings away and pasted a grin on his face. "It's like having a male Donna around."
James wondered if he had pushed the Doctor too far. He felt a little guilty for taking his bad mood out on the Doctor. "Look, Doctor, about what I said..," he muttered, looking at the ground.
"Later," the Doctor said coolly. "Assets! What do we have?"
Jack grinned as the crack in the wall gave way a little more. "Well, we have me," he said, causing the other two men to roll their eyes, "and a crack in the wall."
"Jack, you're brilliant!" the Doctor exclaimed, coming over to Jack and examined the wall. "Come on, let's get out of here."
