The Doctor paused outside the room. He listened for any sign of violence from the inside but it was too quiet, so he pushed the door open, expecting to see either of them bleeding from various wounds. He didn't expect to walk in on Barty straddling James' lap, with his arms around his neck. "Ah, there you are," he said cheerfully, pretending he was unaware of the tension in the room.
"Can we help you?" Barty questioned politely, with an obvious edge to his voice.
"Just making sure you two are keeping out of trouble," the Doctor stated, walking over to where the other two men were sitting. "Not interrupting anything, am I?"
"What possible trouble could I cause?" James asked with an raised eyebrow. "We were just talking." He yelped as Barty tugged hard on his hair. "Stop that!" he hissed, glaring at the brown haired wizard.
"I'm being good," Barty said in an innocent tone, ignoring the snort coming from James' direction. "Not until you tell me."
"I've travelled with a lot of people and they always find trouble," the Doctor pointed out as he perched on the arm of the chair and wrapped an arm around James' shoulder. His arm brushed against Barty's hand and the younger dark haired man had to supress a slight shiver at the contact. "Tell him what?"
"Not me," James stated. "Don't worry about it," he said with a vague handwave.
"Are you two together?" Barty asked, still in that innocent tone of voice.
"Of course. He's my companion," the Doctor answered, not noticing the look on his companion's face. He could feel the combined heat of Barty and James' skin through the fabric of his jacket and an image popped into his mind unbidden of him being in middle of the other two males. 'Stop it, you've been around Jack too long,' he silently scolded himself.
"That not what I meant," the dark haired wizard stated. "Are you two fucking?" he asked bluntly, causing the Doctor's jaw to drop in shock.
The Doctor snapped his mouth shut and stared at the other dark haired man in disbelief. "I can't... I can't believe you said that."
James tried to keep a straight face, but he broke down at the stunned look on the Doctor's face, sniggering into Barty's coat. "His face..," he laughed, trying to compose himself.
"What?"
"He does seem to be a little tightlaced," Barty said as he ran his fingers through the red head's hair.
"What?!"
"Well, obviously you're not, by the look on his face," Barty observed, "but you touch each other like lovers..."
"WHAT?!"
"My dear James tells me that when you go all Oncoming Storm, it's quite sexy," Barty said as he ignored the glare that the red head was shooting him.
"No, I didn't," James stated, a slight flush to his cheeks. "He's lying."
"You did! Don't lie. You told me that you would love him to go all dark and take control of you," Barty said with a smirk on his face.
"I wouldn't tell you anything of the sort! You lying git!"
"Anyway, I've brought you a few pictures of my former companions. You were curious about them, weren't you?" The Doctor stated, interrupting what he knew to be the start of another argument between the other two men. "I mean the ones you haven't met yet."
"I guess," James said as the Doctor reached into his pockets and pulled out a thick photo album.
"You guess? You'd been bugging me with questions since you found out I had other companions," the Doctor said, as he moved to sit in the other chair and patted his knees.
"How could I not find out when you kept telling me about Rose every five minutes?" James said looking slightly annoyed.
"Rose, huh? What's she like?" Barty questioned, climbing off James' lap and plonking himself down on the Doctor's left knee.
"The way the Doctor tells it, she's like Wonder Woman meets Einstein and the Charmed Ones," James answered, settling down on the Doctor's other knee. "I ended up yelling at him so he'd shut up for a while."
"Were there threats?" Barty questioned, looking very intrigued. "Huh?"
"So that's what the rant in that dungeon was about," the Doctor realised, opening the album. He was surprised that Barty was being so docile but he knew it probably wouldn't last. "I only mentioned her once. Now do you want to see my former companions or not?"
They sat in silence for a while, while the Doctor pointed out his various companions and told them a bit about each of them.
"Hmm, I expected her to be a little more Buffy," James said suddenly, pointing to a picture of Rose. He had edited his inital thoughts of the blonde haired ex-companion simply because he knew that Barty may use it against him. "And she just HAD to be blonde," he added with distaste evident in his voice.
"Who or what is Buffy?" Barty questioned, looking bemused.
"She's this vampire slayer as played by Sarah Michelle Gellar. I would definitely throw away my anti-blonde ideals for her," James said, with a cheeky wink. "She's at least hot."
"I'm guessing she's some... Muggle thing."
"Why do you hate blondes so much, James?" The Doctor wanted to know.
It was Barty who answered for James. "Ever since his girlfriend dumped him for someone else, he gets a little touchy about blondes."
"Shut up! You had to bring her into it," James growled, reaching out to hit Barty in the chest.
"Stop it!" the Doctor scolded, grabbing James' hand and forcing it back down.
"Who's that?!" Barty asked, pointing to the picture on the other side.
"Captain Jack Harkness."
"Mm," Barty mumbled, looking very intrigued about the handsome man. "And that is..?" he asked, pointing to another picture.
"Doctor Martha Jones," the Doctor answered. "Why?"
"I think I need a doctor. She can Ennervate me any day," Barty said dramatically, placing his hand on his chest. "Seriously though. She reminds me of someone."
"Yeah, your Ex," James stated, with a sly smile. "Why did she dump you anyway?"
"Oh, Merlin, don't mention her."
"Hit a nerve, have I?"
"Who?" the Doctor wanted to know.
"It doesn't matter," Barty said. "Tell me more about Martha."
The Doctor smiled. "She's brilliant. So brave and wonderful..," the Doctor stated with a smile, as he stroked Martha's picture with his long fingers. "..smart and beautiful."
"She'd be in Gryffindor then?" James pointed out. "I mean, if she was a witch."
"Or Ravenclaw," Barty added, spinning on the Doctor's knee to face the Time Lord. "I like people who are intelligent. I'm sure you're the same way, Doctor."
"Then there was Donna," the Doctor said, indicating Donna's picture. "She saved the universe..."
"Ooh, a red head!" Barty said, staring at her photo. "I bet she's sassy and gives as good as she gets."
"Yep! That's Donna in a nutshell," the Doctor agreed, looking downcast. He didn't really want to go into detail about what happened to Donna and he hoped the other two men didn't notice. "You remind me a lot of her, James."
"I know who I'll be thinking of tonight," Barty said as he gently closed the photo album, took it from the Doctor, and hit James in the head with it, smirking at the yelp that escaped from the red head's throat.
"What are you doing?" James hissed with a hard poke to Barty's side. The dark haired wizard handed him the album and James placed it on the table, next to the chair, after adding his own smack on the brown haired wizard's head.
"Why you..," Barty growled, looking about to go for the red head's throat.
"Stop that," the Doctor scolded again. "Being with you two is like babysitting two naughty ch...Mmmph!" He squeaked in surprise when Barty pulled him in for a kiss, effectively cutting him off. "What was that for?" he asked, once the brown haired wizard released him.
"That's one way of shutting him up," James observed with a devilish smile.
"Because I felt like it," Barty answered with a shrug. "Can I do it again?"
"I should put you both over my knee and spank you for misbehaving," the Doctor commented, looking between the other two men. "What do you two have to say to that, eh?"
