Author Notes: This is an idea I've had brewing in my head for a while now, I thought I'd just put this out to see if people would be interested in it. So... are you? What do you think? c:
The roads were slippy that night, Alex remembers. It was foggy, a thick haze settling over the busy city like a gas cloud. The road couldn't be seen past the front of the car, and the lights from other cars were blurry and distant, the haziness making them eerily distorted. Rain was bouncing off the car roof, the windows, and the street outside. Puddles shone in the dingy city light against the otherwise inky black tarmac.
Alex had leant against the window, head propped up on his elbow, as he watched the overhead street lights rushing past with wide eyes, illuminating the car every few seconds. Jack was driving, not making conversation as he liked to concentrate on the road.
Only that night his concentration hadn't been enough.
They shouldn't have been driving, but Alex had insisted that Jack took him out for a midnight pancake run to IHOP, and Jack couldn't refuse Alex anything.
Alex remembers that they were almost at their destination, just a few blocks away. They were at a crossing, waiting for the red light to turn green so they could hurry away. As soon as it did, Jack pressed down on the acceleration and drove away. Alex was still staring aimlessly out the window.
He didn't see the driver run a red light.
He didn't see the car coming towards them.
He didn't see it hit Jack's side.
Alex had woke up in hospital 3 days later, dazed and confused. He panicked when he realised where he was, the events of that night hitting him like a tidal wave. His blood ran cold, and the world around him started to spin.
Thinking back now, he blames himself for what happened. He hates himself for not noticing the driver, he should have been looking! He shouldn't have even made Jack drive him somewhere in the middle of the night. It was all his fault.
And now his best friend was in a coma, because of him.
