re: being pissed off by Sam/jack. I'm not pissed off because it's there. (well maybe a little. I always thought they were pushing it a little too hard. I like it better when they've jsut got a lot of subtext) It's more that I'm pissed off that we rarely *ever* get slash moments. Captain Jack and the Doctor. Carson and Rodney (although that one doesn't *really* count). That's it. The number of on screen slash moments in my favorite shows. (I'm discounting well established gay characters. Because that's not really "slash" to me for some reason. ) I mean really. Would it kill them to have *one* mirror 'verse episode in which two male characters are happily smooching their way through the episode? Kira (and Hoshi?) had their fun with the gals. I say it's time the boys get to have some fun, too. And it's Mirror!People. So it doesn't have any real impact on our characters. (Except that maybe some of them might get curious. *cough*)
I think on some level TPTB (of all scifi shows) are still afraid of canon slashy subtext. It's such a hot button issue with many people and the media. Look at the kiss in "Duet" it was handled so deftly, and with such humor, but there was still a gigantic uproar.
SGA doesn't have Air Force backing, and they just dipped their toe in the water: the characters were both Civilian and not American.
And Stargate's writers are anything but progressive and proactive. SG1 still has Air Force backing and connections, and they're not going to piss off an institution with a such a long history of sanctioned homophobia. While DADT is still policy, any show with connection to the American military, is never going to have an openly gay hero or even main male character.
It's screwed up, but I honestly can't see anything changing in the near future.
and once again I am glad I'm not actually American.
not that the situation here is perfect, especially in the military. But there's progress. And overall it's a lot mroe live and let live. even my parents, who are very catholic and conservative think they should be left alone. Marriage is another issue for them, but at least they're bitching more the monetary issues than anything else. And they're bitching about married couples who get tax cuts et al., too. I like to think of them as equal oportunity bitchers, er...moaner... er.. complainers. *phew*.
But still, it's a mirror verse. they could have both of them as civilians or something. that's what sci-fi is for. pushing the envelope. I bet there was a lot fuss about kirk and uhura, too, back when it first happened. Hell, for all I care make them their evil twins. as long as they're kissing, I don't care much. Sides, bad is hot. and they could have a cute little scene in which Jack and Daniel (or even Daniel and Cam) stare at each other for a little while and go eeew. We slashers
( ... )
But conservativism is a political force in the country. As is political correctness. If it's going to offend the sensiblities of a certain segement of the population, they won't put it on television.
