A bone to pick with bras

Jan 11, 2010 17:25

I'll begin this with a partial list of rants about bras that Stephanie Pearl-McPhee started. Only partial because I think most women have about thirty personal rants about the garment. (Feel free to add to the list in the comments.)

Rant 1: Why aren't womens bodies good enough without modification or alteration?  [Note: Rant 1 leads directly to Rant ( Read more... )

rants, kvetching

It also bugs me that we're meant to hand wash the expensive ones. Who has time for that?

And who decided that D was the cut off for widely-commercially-available sizes? I confounded the Victoria's Secret staff by showing up with natural DDs and wanting something that wasn't granny-knickers.

The next time you're in State College, go to the lingerie store on College Ave called Jezebel's. They have cup sizes up to K, a HUGE variety, and the woman who runs the place knows her stuff. I mean REALLY knows her stuff.

Is it new? Or, hmm - was it on Calder at one point?

Man, I wish I could find sports bras in my size... that would be great for yoga and hiking and such.

And now that you mention it, I'm going to go free my hostages right now...

I recommend the bustin out community. Women with lots of bra-related suggestions and information (such as the locations and timing of sales).

IMHO, bras are a good thing, they are definitely better than the alternative, which is an aching back and pain when moving. I'm wondering if you might be one of the 80% (where they get that number from is beyond me, but it seems to be the standard estimate) of women wearing the wrong size bra, so they might be wearing out quickly because they aren't designed to hold the weight that is put in them.

I've been playing musical sizes since August, when my son was born. Trying to balance that with not spending a fortune on underwear has been a real challenge. I'm back in most of my pre-pregnancy clothes, but bras are still an issue.

I used to be among that 80%, but haven't been for about 4 years.

Yeah, I've heard/read that pre-pregnancy breasts are... inconsistent. Especially when nursing. Mazel tov, though.

I need some new clothes myself. How about this, Miss J00 - let's do an online bra-and-unmentionables shopping day together. Perhaps pairing it with massages and post-bliss coffee at Irvings...?

I'm totally game. As I mentioned to ragnvaeig above, the unmentionables shop in town is awesome. They have a "bra club," meaning that once you purchase 8 bras, you get one free! Yay free stuff.

W00t! I'm on-board!

Quick funny story about town...

On the bus ride home from work tonight, Guy A sat down next to me, and started chatting with his acquaintance seated ahead of him. He mentioned "going to State College to see his in-laws for the holidays", at which point I interrupted to ask if he was talking about PA, explaining I'm a native. He laughed over it and we reminisced about our favorite things to do up there. Guy B, another stranger seated across the aisle, then piped up, Oh hai, I'm from State College too!

Nobody ever reminisces about College Park, MD. EVER. I'm just sayin', it's nicer up here.
