I now know what death smells like. That smell is liver cooking. *shudder* The things I do for my pets.
(Read that liver is good for rats, so I bought some to cook and keep in the freezer and fridge for feeding a couple of days a week.)
Just... AUGH THE SMELL.

Nana claims that when my mother was a tot she would beg for chicken livers. My mother is now ( Read more... )

There's a small bit in Gorky Park where John Osborne talks about how he ordered leather gloves from a cattle collective & when they got to the border, he inspected the shipment...to find tripe. He contacted the collective & found out that the same day they also shipped an order of tripe to the prison camp at Vogvozdino, so obviously they had his gloves. He contacted Vogvozdino only to be told that he had to be wrong becasue the shipment's contents had already been cooked & heartily devoured by the camp's denizens, & they wouldn't cook gloves, now would they? From then on, he said, he didn't buy gloves from the Soviets & never ate soup east of the Urals.

As with most things, done right, chopped liver is scrumptious. I could eat pounds of the stuff. *drools*

Well, my taste buds have no real objection (though admittedly no real interest either). If Hashem decides the Denis Leary impersonation is funny enough to change the rules, I'll give it another try :)

Should I ever encounter it during my travels, I shall try it. :o)

I really should be more open-minded. -.- I used to love SCRAPPLE, for Heaven's sake.

Maybe the way I was cooking the livers was what caused the smell... I didn't use any seasonings, since they're for the rats, and just seared them in a skillet with a little bit of spray to prevent sticking.

i don't know. don't be so hard on yourself. everyone likes/dislikes certain things, so you might just naturally dislike organ meat.

when i'd cook organ meat, i usually boiled it forever. i've never just fried it up...although i imagine you could slice and fry it after it was boiled to death. i was raised with a phobia of eating organs before extremely boiling them. i'm under the impression that boiling them (and gratuitously changing the water) flushes all the nasty stuff out of them, leaving only the tasty meat!

I heard that you can soak liver in milk to get some of the nastiness out. But again, it's for rats so...

I like both organ meats and chicken feet. Delicious!

I'm pretty sure your description of chicken feet at a Dim Sum place in NY is what made me want to try them!

What counts as being "near-vegan"? I'm tempted at times to go vegan, though I'm not sure if I can. Cutting out eggs wouldn't be too bad, I'm sure I could do milk too. There are a lot of things out there with butter or milk in them, though, that I would probably miss.

I will cut you if you go vegan. Whole Foods don't sell half-carton eggs, and I love baking just too damn much.

She'll do eggs but not milk. I don't quite understand why. She also has celiac disease, so she has to cut ALL gluten out of her diet, and I think being 100% vegan would limit her food options a little too much.
