Room 406, late morning til evening.

Mar 04, 2007 11:10

After the Perk, Isabel returned to her room, made a few handwavey phone calls and then tried to pack. If you can call randomly taking things in and out of drawers packing. Annie sat on the bed watching her, seeming to sense something was going on.

The door was cracked open.

Sam hadn't gotten a call, but she'd talked to Jack the night before. Wincing slightly against the daylight, she knocked on the doorframe.

"Hey Sam," Isabel said quietly, folding up a pair of flannel sleep pants.

"You okay? Is there anything I can do to help you get ready to go?" Sam asked. She'd always hated packing alone.

Isabel was anything but okay, but she'd locked it all down, refusing to think about it and instead focused on the task at hand. "I'm okay. As for help? What do you pack when you're heading off to another planet? It was easier when we went with Professor Harrington."

Anders was depressed, cranky, and unfortunately still feeling . . . shall we say stimulated when he woke up very late in the morning. The voicemail icon on his phone was blinking, and he stared at it for a moment before picking up the phone to check.

The message, combined with what Parker had told him, made him shove all his own worries to the back of his mind long enough to grab a quick shower and charge upstairs to knock on Isabel's door.

"Oh...hi," Isabel said quietly. "Looks like movie day got cancelled. I'm sorry."

Anders couldn't help a brief, almost hysterical laugh. "I'm not even worried about that right now, big sis. It's just . . . do you really have to go?"

She put down the shirt she'd been debating packing and shrugged helplessly. "I don't really have a choice. They made us to come back and save them. How can I turn my back on that?" Granted, Max had offered her a choice but she'd never make it and leave them on their own.

Parker came by with a box half-way through the afternoon. "How are you doing?" she asked, not looking at Isabel.

Isabel had been comtemplating her iPod. "Do you think it's worthwhile to bring it? What will I do when the battery runs down?" she asked, not answering Parker's question.

"Get something to re-charge it. They have to have electricity there. Or the equivalent." Parker put the box down carefully on the desk, and slid Isabel a glancing look. "Between your abilities and a power source, you could probably keep it going for a while." She was quiet. "Something to hang onto, if it gets too crazy."

"Or if it sucks entirely and I just want to tune it all out." Isabel shook her head, "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have said that."

Cedric came down the hall and knocked on the cracked door.

Head buried in her closet as she searched for a missing shoe, Isabel sighed and braced herself for another round of goodbye. "Come in."

Cedric slipped inside the room and said, "Hello."

"Hey," Isabel said over her shoulder before diving back in. "I'm just trying to find a shoe."

Jack stood outside, watching Isabel through the partially open door. Part of him hadn't wanted to come. So much easier not to, so much easier just to let her quietly slip away and start pretending she'd never been here -- because they both knew chances were she wasn't coming back -- but he wasn't going to miss his last chance to see her.

He took a deep breath, made himself smile his oh-so charming smile, pushed open the door, and said, "Hey."

Isabel looked up from where she'd been contemplating her leather pants. To pack or not to pack? But they were armor of a sort and would go great with the jacket Parker had just given her, so she folded them carefully and stuffed them in her bag. "Hey," she said quietly.

"Good choice," he said, pointing to the leather pants. "They're universally sexy." He grinned, and it felt a bit off, but it didn't matter. He wasn't going to make this harder than it had to be. "Add something low cut and slinky, and it won't matter where you end up, you'll fit in just fine."

"Really? Because my luck Antar is going to have two suns to go with its two moons and it'll be too damn hot for leather." Isabel forced a smile, but it was obviously false. "Hell, maybe we'll just all go naked."
