Room 406: Saturday afternoon

Mar 03, 2007 15:00

After Friday night's adventures, Isabel stumbled back to her room sometime well after the sun rose Saturday morning. She cleaned up, then climbed into her bed and passed out.

Sometime in the afternoon, the phone rang. Grumbling, Isabel reached for it and snapped it open.

Max really hadn't wanted to make this call but he knew he had to. Of course he was grateful for any excuse to delay telling Isabel the reason he called. "Gee Isabel, out too late partying?"

Isabel snorted and rubbed her face. "You could say that. We went on a little road trip and didn't get back till this morning."

"Oh? Any place interesting?" he asked, holding up a hand to keep Michael quiet.

For a moment she considered telling him the truth, well I had to help a friend break into a warehouse surrounded by armed guards, but Isabel decided it would be more fun to save the story till she could actually see as well as hear his reaction. "Nah, just went along for company when Parker had to pick up something."

"That was nice of you," Max said, getting to his feet and pacing.

Tiny little alarm bells started going off in Isabel's head, there was something about his tone. "Max? What's going on?"

"Why does anything have to be going on? I can't just call?" He knew that was a lame answer as soon as the words were out of his mouth.

"Max, I can read you like a book still. What is going on?" she repeated, sitting up and brushing her hair back. "Tell me!"

"Larak made contact." Max took a breath, "There's a way back. They want us to come. They need us to come back. Things aren't going well."

Isabel swallowed hard, unable to speak as she tried to wrap her mind around everything. After last year, she thought she'd be ready for this. But it still was a shock.

"Isabel? You don't have to go." Michael looked up sharply and Max shook his head. He wouldn't, couldn't, make her do this, not if she didn't want to.

That shocked her enough that she found her voice again. "No. I'll go. I told you last year." Isabel laughed sharply as she realized that it was just two weeks short of the last time they almost left. "You're my family. Both of you, I won't let you go alone."

Max was selfish enough that he wasn't going to argue with her. "Okay. Thank you."

She didn't want to be thanked. She didn't really want to go. But he and Michael were her family. She wouldn't think about the family she'd leave behind in Fandom. "When? How?"

"Tomorrow night. By way of a wormhole," Max said quietly. "I described the beach to Larak. They'll open it there at 8:00 and you'll meet us on Antar."

It hurt to breathe. "Okay. I'll see you there," Isabel said quietly. "I've got to go now."

Without waiting for a reply, she hung up the phone and threw it across the room.

After a long moment, Isabel got to her feet and started towards where her phone had landed. There were people she needed to tell, she needed to pack, she need to get out of there, she realized.

Within minutes she'd changed into sweats, tied her hair back and was out the door at a run.
