It shouldn't have been a surprise. It was March. Isabel had been holding her breath waiting for whatever trauma the universe was going to dump on her this year. After all, it wasn't as if the last three years had been all that peacefulStill, in the grand scheme of things, a persistent portal that grabbed her on her way to the library and ( Read more... )

Greg peeked over Catherine's shoulder as she carefully examined the twisted body on the strip. "Suicide?"

"Nuh uh," she said, frowning in thought. "I think he was pushed. Look at the contusions -- these bruises were pre-mortem."

Greg nodded, glancing over at Nick to see what he thought. He was still working his hardest to be valuable in the field, and his status as both the newest and youngest CSI, even if he was in training, was a constant presence in the back of his mind. He kept thinking maybe he should actually tone down his hair to look more professional. But that would probably never happen.

"Let's clean this up and get back to the lab," Catherine decided, rising as the me did the same behind her, and David scurried forth to immediately start bagging the body, even as Greg and Nick moved to get markers and their cameras.

Unfortunately going for coffee hadn't been as uneventful as Isabel had planned.

Nothing like turning a corner to find police tape and a dead body sprawled across the sidewalk. She would have kept walking, but something about one of the detectives? standing near the body seemed familiar.

Maybe it was the hair.

Isabel knew the odds of it actually being someone she knew were somewhere around slim to none. But still, she moved closer to see what she could. It wasn't as if she had anything better to do at the moment.

Catherine had already talked to most of the witnesses, so when the blonde approached, Nick was already up with his camera to wave her off. "Ma'am, sorry, this is a crime scene and we're gonna have to ask you to -- "

"Wait." Greg had turned to see who Nick was talking to, his camera hanging in his gloved hand. "Hang on, Nick. I -- Isabel?"

It was such a long shot, it wasn't even funny. And she looked way too young -- at least five or six years younger than him. Maybe it was just a trick of the light or something.

She'd thought it was Greg. Or a least some other universe's older version of him. That he recognized her had Isabel boggling just a tiny bit. She hadn't just jumped dimensions. She'd jump time as well. Nice job Portalocity.

"Yeah," she said, unable to help a smile from spreading across her face. Seeing him was the first non-annoying thing that had happened all day. "Of all the crime scenes in the world, I happened to walk into yours. Go figure."
