Germans settled in a lot of other areas after the Revolutionary War - Ohio, Texas, Minnesota, etc. In fact, the largest group of European immigrants was German. Both of my parents were close to half-German and my ex was half-German, along with both of his parents. I'm close to 7/16th German. Around WWI, a lot of people with German last names changed them. Though in the case of my maiden name, it was naturally Anglicized around 1700. It was originally something like "Barngardt" and somehow mutated to "Barncord" and stayed that way for almost 300 years.

Maybe it was Baumgarten. There are a lot of typical American names that look obviously of German origin to an insider serpent.
Not sure if it is just folklore or actual truth but there was supposed to have been a vote in the USA at some stage to choose the official language. Some of the nominations included Hebrew but the story goes that German lost to English by only one vote. If that was indeed true and it had gone the other way world history could have been very very different

I'm not sure that BeneXVI is so meek and mild, Maybe he just doesn't want to be around when another avalanche of priest paedophilia overwhelms the Vatican from a new source not just the Irish Catholic and its diaspora (US, Australia). He spent so much time as Grand Inquisitor stamping on any of the complaints about priests and covering up for priests during his time in the role, maybe he doesn't want to be around when it gets even slimier.

As much as Sydney Catholics may wish Pell gone, I think that Sydney is stuck with him. I remember when he moved up here, Melbourne was so thankful when he left them. He has been sidelined relating to the child abuse enquiry pretty much because he stuffed the spin. He came across as a hard-hearted, legalist, lacking in all compassion and seemingly not in the least sorry for the misdeeds of his fellow priests' heinous actions. He is tainted by association with the child abuse scandal, so it is even more unlikely he would get the nod. And what would we do without his contributions in the Sunday ( ... )

Only a card carrying member of Opus Dei could possibly believe that Pell scored more than Dawkins in that travesty of a debate. It was all heat and no light ( ... )
