But today looks like it will be just as toasty as yesterday, and yesterday was quite miserable, to be honest. I do not cope well with heat, nor do we have proper air-conditioning in this house. So I either suffer in silence (open windows and fans only do so much when the temperature is around 102 F), or I take myself to one of the local coffee ( Read more... )

I bet he objects! I do not look forward, in any way, to ever being pregnant in a SoCal summer.

When Geo and I lived in Springfield and had no central air (multiple AC window units, but the airflow of the house did not make for the optimal use of these units, thus we tried not to use them unless we absolutely had to) . . . we used to open the windows at night (let the cool air in) and then close the windows during the day (trap the cool air in the house). Would that trick work at all for you? Maybe it would help mitigate the heat a little bit?

We also used to place at least one window box fan facing out in order to keep the air circulating throughout the house (when we had the windows open).

Another stupid question . . . do you have a basement? Because basements are delightfully cool in the summer. My Li'l Bro used to take a lawn chair down into the basement during the summer and read for, like, hours at a time. "Where's Li'l Bro?" "He's down in the basement reading."

Um . . . think cool thoughts?

The cool air doesn't get trapped upstairs, unfortunately. We do the open-close thing downstairs, but basically if I want any sort of airflow in my bedroom at all, I have to keep the windows open and fans on just about 24/7. Otherwise it just heats up and stays heated up. :P

Nope, no basements in LA. I would definitely take up residence if we had one.

*thinks cool thoughts*

(Thanks for the tips, btw.)

So maybe . . . um . . . aim your window fan out so that you suck the cool air from downstairs into your room?

Where I lived (on the borderline between West LA and Santa Monica) was always pretty moderate, but oh YES do I remember driving up to the Valley to meet friends for lunch or hanging out or whatever. Argh!

My tried-and-true method for cooling off to the point where I could relax was filling a dishpan with cool water and paddling my feet in it as if it were a swimming pool. Of course, it's difficult to *sleep* that way, but in the daytime it works wonders.

Think cool thoughts, dude.

Yes, I figured you were hot and cranky.

At least it isn't humid.
My favourite trick for unbearably hot (but not humid) weather is to stick my head in the shower and get my hair all wet with cold water. Sure, it will dry soon enough, but while it is wet one has some relief.
