So. Stargate Universe.

The jury is still really out on whether I continue to watch this show.

I'll give it another episode. )

My fave part of the whole series is RDF is back - even if only for little bits. The premise is s total rip-off of Star-Trek Next Generation - the one with Patrick Stewart as "Captain Jean-Luc Picard".

RDF? Richard Dean Anderson? If so, yes. SG1 was never the same for me when he faded from the picture. Even if he'd remained as head of SGC I would have been OK with that. After all, he was getting a little old to be running jaffa and dodging zat blasts. *G* But he pretty much left all together and I lost interest in the show.

Did you ever watch "Farscape"? - I LOVE Ben Browder in it, no one does - well maybe Jason Momoa from Stargate Atlantis - does leather pants better than Ben in Farscape. :) I watched him in SG1, but like you I lost interest when RDF - (faster to type than Richard Dean Anderson LOL) left also.

I'm actually in the middle of watching S1 of Farscape.

Even though I love Ben Browder and Claudia Black, I'd already lost interest in SG1 by the time they came on board. I've only ever seen bits and pieces of the eps with Mitchell and Vala. One of these days I'll probably go back and watch them.

BTW? It's the 'F' in RDF instead of RDA that threw me. *G*

I'm in agreement with you here, roomie and I are trying to watch it, but it's just not really holding our interest. We can't seem to find any characters we really care much about, either.

Yeah, it's a little hard to generate interest in a group of people you could care less about, even if it is full of drama.

Everything that you said...despite my not having watched last night's episode. Because of your review I will watch it for those last ten minutes and then...see if it's enough to pull me in for another ep or two.

It's so disappointing because the idea has potential as long as it's not a rehash of old ideas.

The biggest mistake was making Rush the way that he is right now. I would've written him as driven but with a dash of wonder that he'd want others to feel. He'd be like, "Yes, things seem dire but...but! We're on a really cool old ship and, yeah yeah, it's in bad condition but with a little paint we can put on this musical!" Or, um, something like that...maybe. ;)

Yeah, I'll give it one more episode but if it hasn't done a considerably better job of generating empathy for any of the characters I'm going to consider this show a write off.

Total tactical error on the part of the producers. The Stargate reputation will only carry a show so far. This has the potential to be very disappointing. :(

Can we sic Stitch on the creators of the show? Maybe scare them into writing better scripts?

Finally watched the ep and that last scene...the very, very last image...now *that* was intriguing!

Yeah, it was the last few minutes that tipped the decision - barely - for me to tune again for at least one more show.

I even found myself liking Greer (black sgt.) because of his steadfast refusal to leave his commanding officer behind. Eli and the senator's daughter became more likable, too. Rush? Still not so much.

We'll see.

BTW? I really liked the song playing at the very end.

I am still trying to get over Greer's initial introduction which is the lone black guy/person with any dialogue has to be gotten out of JAIL to help out in the beginning. Really. And so I'm tapping my foot to see how his character develops. I suppose his fate is better than Ming Na's who had no lines in this last episode. And what's up with the two seconds of Lou Diamond Phillips per episode ( ... )

Yeah, I was rolling my eyes at Greer's cliched past, too. The only other black person is a cook. (insert 2nd eye roll). I did like his determination at the end and I've come to the conclusion that he just hates Rush. That's OK because I kinda do too. That smacking him in the back thing was pretty shitty, though.

I wasn't too perturbed at Ming Na's lack of lines though. This is a pretty big cast. Not everyone is going to get lines in every episode. If I continue to watch it'll be interesting how they use an ethnic lesbian, though. Someone else on my flist was talking about someone using her body to have sex with a man. I'm guessing it's through the alien communication stones. That's going to be interesting.

I just really have mixed feelings about this show. I want to like it, but TPTB are going to have to do a lot of romancing to get me on board.

Yeah, I did an eyeroll at the cook as well. And you know Greer's ANGRY so smacking Rush in the head is to be expected. Yikes. In three hours of programming, I think he's already had three fights. And I figure the the no man left behind is in keeping with his training so that was to be expected. To be fair I do suspect that the reason he was in the brig may turn out to make him look good. Maybe.

I didn't necessarily have a problem with him smacking Rush 'cause there's no time for bullshit in their situation.

Certainly not everyone will have lines, but the fact that Ming Na's the double minority, a pet peeve, worries me. The early eps seem to establish the relationships that will be important throughout. And so far her only relationship seems to be an antagonistic one with Greer, a man Yippee.

Hopefully in the next ep they will feature other characters, like Ming Na's if for no other reason than we need a break from Rush.

And you know Greer's ANGRY so smacking Rush in the head is to be expected. Not really. It's to be expected that he'd WANT to smack him (hell, I want to smack him constantly!) but to actually do so, when his commanding officer is standing there, supposedly in control; to smack an unarmed, untrained man nearly twice his age, kneeling in the sand and gasping for breath? Yeah, that's just being a bully. That coupled with holding a gun on Rush, threatening to shoot him in the first episode, despite his Lt continually ordering him to stand down, all on the say so of Eli, a KID he barely knows and really knows nothing about other than he's opposing Rush? That points to an unstable personality with anger issues ( ... )
