Sybil was putting together desserts for the de Worde-von Borogravia wedding, because they were the sorts of things meant to be handed out to guests on doilies, and she could swing that quite well. So Chris was gone. Chris was gone, and Lennox was broken hearted, and there wasn't anything that Lily could do but take care of her children, of Emmy and Mathieu, and love her husband, and get on with it. That was it. That was what there was.

She walked into the kitchen, babyless, for once, and smiled when she saw her friend at the counter.

"You look busy."

Sybil blinked, looking up, and smiled.

"Do I? Oh, good. There's a wedding in a few days, I'm preparing a few things. Nice to have something to do," she added, and realized that as blithely pleased as her tone was, it was hollow.

"I'm pretty good at following directions, if you need a helping hand?"

Lily knew Sybil well enough to recognise what was missing in her friend's tone. She crossed the kitchen and touched Sybil's shoulder, gently.

"Or we could just have a cup of tea?"

Sybil stopped what she was doing, eyes doing, and pressed her lips together for a moment. She lifted her head and smiled, a bit tersely, wiping her hands on the little dishtowel she had tucked into her apron.

"A short break for tea would be- lovely, actually.'
